PSYCHOANALYSIS & POLITICS:
THE IMPOSSIBLE RELATION

FEB 22 & 23, 2025—BK/NYC

group for independent formation / greene clinic

I suppose one could describe the relation between the two by the term used by Slavoj Zizek, the parallax view: a shifting perspective between two points of view, between which no synthesis or mediation is possible. One can only see the one way or the other, although one is looking at the same thing. The two may be two sides of the same thing, but they can never meet at the same level; there is no neutral common space; there is a non-relation, but this ties them together. There is a parallax gap. Maybe this metaphor, this model, is not a bad way of conceiving how psychoanalysis and politics belong together but can never quite meet or converge. And it is not true that everything is political. It is rather the opposite: politics is rare. It’s a very scarce thing, and so is psychoanalysis.
